Spring has come again. Fresh, new, full of hope. The warmth of sunbeam and the smell of freshly growing grass is a great mood modifier, transforming the quiescence of the winter into a power rush, with the sensation that everything is possible. Flowers bloom, bees fly around, birds sing loudly, insects reproduce and many other animals finish their hibernation period.
But this spring changes are not exclusive of big bears, spiders or green grasses; physiological changes are described in many species; and for instance, Homo sapiens, faces some processes which are mainly related with the circadian rhythm. During springtime, the periods of light are longer and adapting to the changes in sunlight can take approximately a week. The brain produces more of the neurotransmitters that are in charge of happy moods and pleasure (serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine), and also more feromones are liberated, which increase libido; so that we have a circulating elixir that all around our vessels reduces stress and improves the mood. In a few words, we feel like teenagers, running, discovering, enjoying, learning, and this “spring syndrome” is well recognised in most people.
So if it is just a biological phenomenon, then: why is spring so spiritually gratifying?, how can we understand the deep meaning of the season? What can we do to connect with divine power using this amazing time of the year?
Here is where everything starts. Spring means the beginning of life, the renovation of the world, in the goddess tradition we represent it with the maiden archetype, (who enters to the wheel of the year when Imbolc is celebrated), and with the element of the fire, which marks the beginning of the bright half of the year, situated in the point of the east.
In the maiden we rejoice, in her we trust our deep wishes to grow and she is the freshness and the innocence, the girl inside ourselves who we must embrace for her to prevail. In the fire we find our will, our strength and personal power, is the divine spark that can light and burn, the impulse to happen and to be brought to reality.
Across history we can find mythology about this season in several cultures, some of them spoke about the renewal of color and life, and here I can mention the most known legend, the rape of Persephone, in other places they talk about the equinox, and some others like wiccans celebrate Ostara, (if you want to talk about it mail me: jmflamel@omniaquest.com) and many other feminine young figures that explore the world with candid eyes and make our hearts melt and learn with her stories.
So, hold on to the wheel that is spinning very fast… I have been writing this page during some weeks and the time came as soon as I didn’t expect, so had to be short and keep the deep information for other articles, but the real thing that I want this spring is to share my best wishes and to bring up the truest meaning of the season, the reason to praise the fire, and the east and the maiden, which is discover the internal spark and see how mighty you are. I sincerely hope this season (that is already running, and running fast) you hold your power, ignite the spirit fire with intentions and desire, recognise your special abilities and let yourself enjoy experiences that may bring bliss and happiness, start the cycle of the fire and renovation, becoming a better version of the great spirit you are… praise to all beings, the maiden, her bravery, appreciate every form of life, live consciously the renewal of the world and start a very happy new light cycle. Blessings to you all.
